Florence is the birthplace of football in Italy. It is where the sport took shape and gained the name 'calcio'
It all began with 'Calcio Fiorentino' (Florentine football), which spread in the late 1400s and developed over the following centuries. It wasn't until the end of the 19th century when English football started to influence the Florentine pioneers of the modern game. In 1898, Florence Football Club was born, an event that places the ancient and noble origins of calcio in Florence.
In 1909, Florence Football Club was no longer mentioned in local records and, towards the end of 1912 and the beginning of 1913, two of the oldest and most illustrious people's sporting associations formed their own football teams: Club Sportivo Firenze, a cycling organisation founded in 1870, and Palestra Ginnastica Fiorentina Libertas, a gymnastics society founded in 1877.
After the Great War, which put a halt to any football whatsoever, a fierce rivalry built up between the two squads until 29 August 1926 when the Marquis Luigi Ridolfi Vay da Verrazzano, the President of Club Sportivo Firenze with powerful political influence, persuaded the two clubs to merge their respective football teams into the Associazione Fiorentina del Calcio (the Fiorentina Football Association). Fiorentina was born.
Known as the purple pride of the Florence, Fiorentina started gaining prominence and a golden era ushered in the mid 50's which lasted till the late 60's. During this period Fiorentina won two Scudetto's (1956,1969), finished runners-up of four occasion and two Coppa Italia title (1961 and 1966) . They also won the UEFA Cup winner's cup in the year 1961, thus becoming the first Italian side to win in Europe
However, the club faded out of limelight in the next three decade and could only manage only one Coppa Italia win (1975) and reached the finals of the UEFA cup once in 1990.
The club in the early 2000's got spiraled into debt related problems and were relegated to Serie B in 2002. Refused a place in Serie B due to its financial woes, the club found a saviour in the city mayor and was eventually re-founded and re-admitted to Italy’s fourth tier under the name Fiorentina Viola.
By this stage it had come under the ownership of the influential entrepreneur Diego della Valle, who would engineer their miraculous rise back to the Italian top flight within just two seasons, the club buying back its name in the process, becoming known as ACF Fiorentina.
Under the tenure of current Italy coach Cesare Prandelli, the club made tremendous transition and from being relegated to the lower division returned to the European top flight. They reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2008 and appeared in the UEFA Champions League in the following two seasons, advancing to the last 16 of the competition in 2010.
Though still some way short of the pinnacle they reached in the 1960s, La Viola have, under Della Valle's watchful eye, restored their pride and standing following the most turbulent period in their history.
